Gone But Not Forgotten

As I was driving in to work today, the thought occurred to me that people will be coming into my life that never knew me a married person. For Gene to have been such a big part of my life and to still take up so much of my thoughts, it just seems down right wierd that these new people wouldn't have some concept of him. To those of you who knew him -- I like to imagine that you might think about him from time to time.

How Quiet Is Quiet?

Ever been to the desert and listened to silence? I did one time on a trip to Big Bend. Even the smallest of skittering things were still in the shade of some pebble. Nothing. Nothing to hear. It was so quiet it hurt. You can see why the prospectors in old movies were always muttering to themselves. That kind of absence of sound feels like you're listening to a roar. Why do I bring it up? Had a touch of tinnitus yesterday and it kind of reminded me of it.

Latest Trip

It's been a long time since I've really updated my blog, but here's the latest. Martha and I went to Las Vegas last week for a couple days. Gene died on her birthday last year and I wanted us to have a new memory for her birthday this year. Something big. Spending it in Las Vegas seemed pretty big to me. It's hard not to be distracted by seeing the conspicuous consumption of resources and currency that abounds. We enjoyed our time together and it was certainly a distraction from the anniversary date of Gene's passing.
