Silent Movies

Dad told me a story today about the first movie he saw. They lived in New Hope, Arkansas then. Some fellow had a garage and moved all the cars over to one side and they had some chairs set up. His dad/my grandfather, Ben D., was a school teacher was asked to read the captions aloud since many of the older audience members didn't read or at least couldn't read it fast enough while the words were on the screen. If Dad was 11 as he remembered, this would have happened around 1927.
